The Lighthouse Tavern Story "It's too laid back"...by Tommi: wife, mom and 1/2 owner

After a brief introduction by a past friend as the owner of the Lighthouse Tavern (my husband actually owns it with me), the following conversation insued:

"I don't get it" claimed a patron of a near by high class restaurant bar (across the street and down the block, hmmm....), "where are you from?".  "New York" I answered calmly - I was actually born and raised in Manhattan.  She continued.  "I went in there (the Lighthouse Tavern) and people were just sitting around drinking and talking.  It's like it doesn't belong in this neighborhood, it's too laid back."  After this blunt remark about my bar, my baby - after a grueling year of construction and everyone asking "What's this place gonnna be?" despite the 20 foot bar already in place (there are rumors I told some people it was going to be a poodle grooming place...now does that sound like me?), after one year of building rapor with the locals as a neighborhood watering hole with great booze and food, a fantastic microbrew selection in both bottle and on tap, great music, my favorite bartenders that I gathered from surrounding bars and restaurants, after NFL, NBA and March Madness packages from Direct TV, and Baby Happy Hour and Toddler Happy Hour and movie nights starting on Tuesdays, and special ordering whatever our customers ask for... I was rather thrown back!  I bit my tongue,  I thought for a second or 2.  I decided.  This woman has no idea what she is talking about.

We offer one of the widest selection of liquors in Brooklyn with well over 10 different brand name Vodkas (got rid of the one made from Soy, it was gross), an excellent offering of both Bourbon, Scotch and Irish Whiskey, Tequila, Rum, Gin, Guaro and more.  If beer is your taste, 15 taps of mostly microbrews should enjoyably quench your thirst (and an improved cask system on the way! It's seasonal so please call ahead to check availability).   And if its a quick bite your after, a relaxing brunch or a pub evening of drink and food, try one of our menu favorites - everything from burgers (beef, turkey or veggie) to Costa Rican Bocas prepared by our very own "tico" chef (my hubby - he was born in San Jose, Costa Rica)!  Francisco, our new assistant chef, also delights our regulars with menu and brunch specials that will send your taste buds soaring!

So maybe she has a point - maybe we are a little "too laid back" - afterall, I spent years living at the beach and still wear sunglasses on my head in January.  Even our introducer said the bar reminded her a of a place that would be in Montauk, a place I love to hang out and can sometimes be caught tossing a few back (been to Nick's lately?) - but face it guys, the Montauk Club is up the block - and its $1k a year to join.  You can come in to the Lighthouse and hang with us for brunch at $11.95 a pop for beer and a burger.  Don't get it?  Too bad.  Luckily the rest of the neighborhood does - so come join them!
